MCPS MANUFACTURING LICENCING
There is a legal requirement that all UK Manufacturing of CD / Vinyl / Cassettes etc., must be subject to the issue of an appropriate MCPS Manufacturing Licence. This applies to all copyrighted material, both original and "cover" versions.
Typically this will be an AP1 or AP2 Licence, but for up to 250 copies for direct sales of 100% original music at gigs or on a personal website then a Limited Manufacture Licence may be more appropriate.
This can cause anomalies when releasing CDs etc., on your own Imprint / Label (see below).
Digital (download only) releases do not require this type of licencing and your aggregator should assist you in all appropriate licencing formalities if releasing "cover" versions.
Other types of music products may be licenced as shown HERE.
APPLYING FOR YOUR AP2 LICENCE
You will normally be responsible for applying for your own AP2 Licence if the release is on your own Imprint / Label and an MCPS Invoice will be raised for using published music, but we can still pay licencing invoices relating to all songs published by Maori Music Publishing for you if you wish - details on request.NOTE : You are still responsible for the payment of any proportion of the licence due to the inclusion of "cover" versions, where songs are co-composed with a songwriter who is not signed to Maori Music Publishing, or for songs published by publishers other than Maori Music Publishing.
If this service is requested by any Individual Band / Act, DIY Label or Indie Label then Maori Music Publishing shall retain all subsequent amounts received from the MCPS (nett of MCPS Commissions) in order for us to recoup this outlay and your period of contracture will be extended by one further year.
Alternatively you may opt to pay any Invoice yourself in full and then you will receive a large proportion of the manufacturing licence fee back via Maori Music Publishing (less the MCPS' and our commissions) in reimbursement and will continue to be eligible to receive any future mechanical royalty recoveries from the MCPS via Maori Music Publishing.
HOW MUCH WILL AN AP2 LICENSE COST?
Royalties are calculated at 8.5% of the Published Dealer Price (PDP) multiplied by the number of copies to be manufactured (plus VAT). If you do not operate a PDP structure, you may use the alternative rate of 6.5% of the retail price (ex. VAT), again, multiplied by the number of copies to be manufactured (plus VAT).Royalties are only charged on MCPS controlled Works and are calculated pro rata on timings of each musical work against the overall length of all the musical works on the Disc.
Limited Manufacture Licences are charged at a fixed rate costing around £200 for 250 copies.
NOTE : This is a basic guide and pricing may change at short notice.
