MAORI MUSIC PUBLISHING : PROMOTIONAL RESOURCES

Promotion is key!

UK GIG FINDER RESOURCE

For most bands, playing "live" is their best form of self-promotion as, in addition to "spreading the word" they can also sell merchandise (CD's, Vinyl. T-Shirts, Badges etc.,) directly to their fans and followers.

SYNC PROMO

For those clients who do or don't perform "live" then Maori Music can promote your music for Sync Promo consideration (potential use of music in Film, TV and Media Projects).
This is, for the most part, a Business To Business (B2B) service as no publisher is a "promoter" as such and you should consider submitting as much music as possible for this service.

UK PR / MEDIA PROMOTERS RESOURCE

For more advanced promotion of your music, then Radio "Plugging" / Press Campaigns etc., that are specialised services, should be in place 1-3 months prior to your proposed release date, especially if you wish to arrange a "pre-release" facility.

Some points to consider when going down this route - firstly it is not going to be cheap!
Whilst it can be argued that "all publicity is good publicity" you should bear in mind the quality of the publicity you'll get by using such companies and whether the potential return will justify the outlay.
When it comes to radio promotion, there are only a handful of national broadcasters in the UK and you'll be up against literally hundreds of other Bands / Acts in your position who'll be attempting to get this sort of exposure.
It's illegal to pay to get played on any Radio / TV Station, so it will depend on the promoter's personal contacts with those stations (and of course the quality / genre of the music they're promoting) as to whether they can get your music onto their playlists.
One play of your single is a result, in a way, but it's only multiple plays (on rotation) that will show appreciable publishing returns and, of course, help in promoting your current release (or back catalogue).
In some ways, easier targets for most promoters are local / regional radio stations, some of which are purely Internet based whilst others may broadcast on FM or DAB frequencies.
Here's something to remember - such stations are generally not interested in music!
What they are interested in is newsworthy content for their local areas so it's simply not sufficient to just approach them saying "we're a band that has a single / ep / album out" and hope it's enough to get continued plays on those stations (unless you already have an established national profile).
Primarily you have to actually be from their area - why would a station in Cornwall be remotely interested in a band from Aberdeenshire unless by some chance they were touribng / playing in their area and so might attract the interest of their local listeners?
So give them something they can talk about - while they're talking about you and your music they're not talking about somebody else!
Check who your promoter says they're approaching - local / independent stations come and go and you need to be sure that the station and their demographic not only still exist but have an audience who are generally likely to be receptive to your music - a station playing mainly 70's pop aren't going to do much for a cutting edge dance / rap act etc.
Finally don't buy the Rolls Royce yet!
Many local / regional stations only make "sample" returns back to the PRS as part of their licencing agreement meaning that it's quite possible that, even with a handful of "plays" you might not receive anything in the way of broadcasting royalties although, obviously, it's always possible that they will translate into a handful of sales / downloads of your music (as a publisher we don't monitor this).
Also, because these stations have a relatively small audience, the royalty per play is equally small, often a few pence.
Again, another reason that multiple plays are the only way to get appreciable returns from most local / regional broadcasters.
